HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INDONESIAN MARKET

Indonesia’s location on the edges of the Pacific, Eurasian, and Australian tectonic plates makes it the site of numerous volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. Indonesia has at least 150 active volcanoes, including Krakatoa and Tambora, both famous for their devastating eruptions in the 19th century.

In 2010, 610 natural disasters occurred in Indonesia, killing an estimated 1600 people. Floods, hurricanes and landslides (respectively 247, 154 and 146 in 2010) are the three most frequent events. The eruption of Merapi near Yogyakarta and the tsunami that devastated the western coast of Sumatra in October 2010, as was the massive earthquake that hit Japan in March 2011, has highlighted the weakness of the country and its vulnerability to natural disasters.

The city of Padang is sitting on « a time bomb. » Experts believe it could be devastated by an earthquake tsunamigenic in the coming years.

Since the earthquake and the tsunami of the 26 of December 2004 that killed 167,736 people in Indonesia, many programs (government, NGOs, private) have been set up to fight against natural disasters. But the needs remain enormous as was recalled in the events of 2009 and 2010.
